I'm curious too considering hexui has / had the mentality of not writing memory and even deemed an overlay to be unsafe before

A quick update on this, maybe it would be safer to write cl_player_proximity_debug as an alternative to glow ESP, since that is probably one of the first things Valve will go after for (and might already be flagging)

no it would never be safer to patch cvars for anything.
they haven't gone after this method for the 12-years it has been available, while cvars patching has been checked since day one.
